Abstract
"One hundred and eighty-six patients who visited urology clinic. Seoul National University Hospital with urethral stricture during the period from April 1. 1954 to June 30, 1961 were clinically investigated. Among these 186 cases 55 were hospitalized Their ages ranged from 8 to 81 year. In this series, we found that the post-traumatic urethral stricture occurred more frequently than the post-gonorrheal stricture which had been predominant in its number formerly. This ay be the result from the frequent use of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics for the gonorrheal infection. namely 45.9% of post-traumatic, 22.95% of post-gonorrheal, 10.96% simple inflammatory, and 20% of others. The rate of urethral stricture to the total urologic patient was 2.51% The most susceptible age group were from 31 to 50. (post-gonorrheal stricture, from 41 to 50, post-traumatic stricture, from 21 to 40) The interval before stricture became clinically apparent with those of traumatic etiology were mostly within 6 months after injury. In those of gonorrheal stricture, 32.9% of cases were noted between 16 to 20 years after infection. 26.2% of post-gonorrheal stricture and 32.1% of post-traumatic stricture occurred in the bulbomembranous urethra, and the pendulous urethra was involved in 26.2% of post-gonorrheal nature and in 22.6% of post-traumatic cases. Only Filiforms were able to be passed in majority of cases. (37.6%) The main symptoms of this series were dysuria, narrow stream of urine, frequent urination, retention of urine, and hesitancy. The complications noted fractures, fistules, and inflammation of the urinary tract. The treatment employed most frequently were periodical dilation of the urethra with increasing the size of dilator gradually."
